Base types
There are many different base types to choose from, each one has different characteristics. Barrels can be the same way, one barrel may like something different than another similar barrel. Different based slugs can help with this issue. Below are some pictures and descriptions of each type of base that we offer.
Hollow Base
The hollow base does three things that benefit air guns. First, it helps seal and grip rifling in barrels that aren't perfect. Second, it moves the mass of the slug forward making it more forgivable to slower twist rates. Another inherent problem with pellet guns. Third, it removes enough weight to make an extremely lite weight slug that is still long enough to fly good. These do best in break barrels and lower power pcp guns. High power guns will prefer a shallower base.
Classic Pellet Base
This is a standard pellet base on the back of a slug. It has a thin skirt that does an excellent job gripping the rifling during muzzle blast. This is a very forgiving base and flies great in several different guns. It is one of my favorites.
Cup base
Cup base have a shallow cavity with a rim around the edge. The rim is not very pronounced but does help seal the slug and grip the rifling. It does remove a small amount of weight and shift it slightly forward. Very popular in the airgun world.
Dish base
Dish base slugs are just that, a shallow dish that stretches from one edge to the other. They will provide a slight aid in sealing. It is very important that they fit properly, you want a snug fit.
Flat base
Flat base slugs are pretty straight forward. They do not aid in sealing. Once again, diameter is very important. You want a snug fit. If you have a high power gun, these like to go fast.
Rebated Boat Tail
The rebated boat tail base is designed to reduce the air turbulence at the back of the slug. This comes into play when traveling sub sonic speeds. This is where we live in the airgun world. These have the best bc of any slug we make. They are long and fairly heavy, so a powerful gun is a must. The longer they get, the faster the twist rate must be.
